Yes, but they would spent their money better by understanding why decoherence happens instead of pushing it down as unwanted side effect. It is IMHO essential to understand decoherence to get it a) under control, and b) understand its impacts to the system in operation. IMHO, decoherence is already explained quite well in the BCS-theory of superconduction (for the limited field of cooper pairs), and the broader result is that coherence can't work in an ever-changing environment, it needs stable condition (stable in so far that the information flow between the entangled particles and their environment is faster than that environment is changing). This means that this is not "instantaneous", which is why the current academic quantum computers slow down with every qubit added, and this slow-down is inevitable, and depends on distance (so miniaturizing qubits is speeding things up). It also makes clear that the ultimate promise of quantum computing, i.e. that you can solve difficult things essentially in an instant, will never come true. It won't be instantly, it still will take time; time proportional to the big-O notation of the problem at hand. If miniaturized well enough, it will be a hell lot faster than what we can do now, but it will not be a breakthrough that you can break cryptography in an instant that takes 10^100 years now to break. It might be "only" 10^80 years or so. Which is still a tremendous achievement, though not one the NSA is hoping for ;-). So I think the truth is at conflict with the wishful thinking which funds both academia and commercial research, and therefore, people will try to work around that conflict by not actually looking too close at these issues. Which is about the same reason why D-Wave does what they do. Satisfy the funders. Just even more extreme than academia. -- Bernd Paysan "If you want it done right, you have to do it yourself" http://bernd-paysan.de/
