Automatics I've seen let you put the car in neutral, or shift to a low
gear for purposes like pulling out of snow.  And they certainly use
automatics plenty of the time in places with snow.  One nice thing about
manual is you can push start the car if the battery is dead.  I don't
know if that works with automatics.

Some web searching indicates that 18 wheelers are still mostly manual,
though automatics are out there too.  Apparently they have a lot of
forward speeds and the right one to choose depends on the cargo load and
maybe the expected terrain.  Still I'd think a computer could take all
that into account.

I tend to agree with this.  It's sort of like Forth that way ;-).
