I was originally posting to comp.lang.misc about a theoretical problem and found myself using C for the examples. Since the issue applied to C compilation I added comp.lang.c. The issue remains, however, which is in a project of arbitrary size how to generate complete compiler-invocation commands programmatically, making sure that all the necessary 'include folders' are provided (with switches such as -I). For this purpose, one could assume either that #include lines omit folder names or that if they do give folder names they are still intended to be relative to an unspecified point, requiring the preprocessor to carry out a search in the form you mention. The problem is in any particular compile how to know which folder names to use. All I can think of just now is to have a configuration file which says which 'include folders' to use for which source files. -- James Harris
