The problem is not that you pay, it's that you don't have the source,
and the license is privative of your freedom to continue using it (and if
the software is badly designed and need it, to update it) for ten or
thousands of years.

Program libraries should also be legacy that your heirs can inherit!
If you spend so much on them, they aught to have some value!

You need also skills to read books. Inheriting a book libraries should
motivate you to learn reading…

This is obviously a big, but entirely different question.
If you write software that must last long, don't write it in the fucking
language du jour invented by the latest newbie (the programmer
population doubles every 5 years, which means 50% of the programmers are
unwashed newbies with less than 5 years of experience!).
Instead, write your software in programming languages that have passed
the proof of time: Fortran (60 years), Lisp (59 years), or if you want
to take risks, C which is 49 years young…

It's a universal hammer.

See, this is the problem I'm denouncing.

A programmer who would write a upper case hammer software, when
he could as well write a universal hammer software is a fucking bitch!

All this is not due to programming or computer science constraints, but
only due to the economic and financial system you're slaving for.

Notice the contraste between the http://longnow.org/ purposes and the
financial quarter horizon under which most current software development
occurs.

Better than MS-Windows which requires a reboot everyday!

Indeed.
