I happen to like DOS .bat files, but these are a) for DOS only, b) for
simpler projects.

I think that's true of any executable in a privileged environment.
AFAIK, your only option, if this is a concern, is to build in a
non-privileged account, at least for Unix or Linux etc.  VMS had ACLs.
IIRC, SysV had the ability to set per user privileges for executables.
I don't recall what Stratus Continuum's did here for security ...
