Ich denke, das war auch eine Mentalitätsfrage, bei IBM wie deren Kunden. Man war es halt gewohnt, dass man eine ganze Abteilung und mehrere Dutzend Leute braucht, um einen Mainframe am Laufen zu halten. Rechner wurden aber auch damals schon nicht nur von Banken und Versicherungen benutzt. Die Vorstellung, dass man nur 1 Person braucht, um 1 Rechner zu betüdeln, war der IBM ebenso fremd wie konservativen RZ-Chefs. Erst recht, dass das Verhältnis sich umkehren könnte, also dass 1 oder 2 Leute sich um viele Dutzend Rechner kümmern würden. In den 1980ern wurde das aber normal, zumindest in der UNIX/VMS-Welt.
