A lot of this I wouldn't consider to be the remit of a system to 
translate source code to executable.

And installation is a separate process. IME, of getting an already built 
application in binary format on some distribution medium, onto the 
user's machine in usable form.

What does make know about where I keep my documentation? Or does it 
assume everyone in the world is a Unix user?

Yesterday I went to some trouble to install a new gcc with a working 
make program. I tried it on one project, and it turned out the makefile 
was only for Unix-like systems, as it needed ./configure to be run (this 
was on Windows).

However there was a .bat file supplied for use under Windows (which I 
hadn't spotted) and that eventually worked. It was also 1/4 the size of 
configure+makefile, and clear enough that I could figure how to manually 
compile the core program, and hence how to apply my own compiler.

I need certain information, and the makefile fanatics want to do their 
utmost to hide it from me.
