I'm now lost. I don't follow what you are saying here at all.
All I wanted was an actual real-world example -- in C -- where your
eof() function makes the loop simpler (in your eyes). I could then have
a go at writing it in idiomatic C. Other people can the see what they
prefer. I'll get something from it too -- the "best" example where C's
style of IO does not work so well. I suspect it will be somewhat
contrived but so far I've not even a contrived example.

Please, don't be silly. What are a, b and c? Are they strings,
integers, floating point numbers, S-expressions, unions of all of these?
How are the three "things" recognised? Is there some default parsing
going on? If they are strings, is there a default separator? What if
the separator is missing -- does 'a' get all the line and the code then
prints undefined values? What happens when an IO error occurs? Is
eof(f) really a test for (eof(f) || error(f)) as in your C eof()
function?
Finally, why is that code (whatever it's doing) better than
while readln @f a, b, c do
println a, b, c
od
? It looks simpler to me and I have to guess about fewer things.
So, stop avoiding the key issue and show me a C input loop that is
better using your eof() function. You could also address the question
of whether you agree that at least in the case that started all this
off, the C way is better. And if you don't agree you could show me how
you would write it better using eof().

I don't want a vague pattern, I want a C example. Of course "looping
while not EOF and reading some data" is a simple pattern. It's just
wrong in almost every case for a C input loop.
