Sure, but it's just extra complication because it puts the data back.

Yes, but it does not put the data back so there is no extra complication
of reading it all again.
If your eof kept the data while indicating success or failure O would
not be complaining about -- I'd just be telling you to call it getc.

Yes, so write your own line input function. My contention has never
been the C's input functions are perfect, just that you should use them
(if you choose to do so) in the simplest, most idiomatic way possible.
And if you do write your better line input function, makes sure it uses
the C pattern of indicating success or failure -- that way you can write
simple loops with no extra testing using your eof function.

Eh? That's not C. You may have found a perfect solution to doing IO,
but I can't even comment on it, let alone write a correct, idiomatic C
version, when I don't have a reference manual for that language.
