Yes, but not a /good/ choice, in my option. If, say, a read operation
were to return a count of successfully translated numeric items you
could do more with it. You don't have to use the value, but it's there
if you need it, telling you important information that is expensive to
recover. The implementation cost is next to nothing since you need to
decide if there is a number there in order to implement the default
value behaviour.

C does it like this:

  while (fgets(line, sizeof line, fp)) {
     double x = 0, y = 0, z = 0;
     if (sscanf(line, "%g %g %g", &x, &y, &z) > 1)
         // process lines with at least one number (others taken as 0)
  }

or change the > 1 to == 3 and process only those with three numbers.
Your readLn appears to be a statement without any signalling that goes
back to the caller. That design has leaking into your C with most the
functions not returning any indication of success (readlinen is void and
the conversion functions just have ago).

I have said nothing that would make you think that. Look at both my C
code for your "challenge" and the C code above.

I don't follow this at all. Would you not want to be told that there is
an error in the input? You've said you don't want that for a config
file but I'm just saying I bet you would if the error I showed had
annoyed you enough.

Indeed. You should not, in C, use an eof test no matter what parsing
you have to do with the input text afterwards. (There are exceptions,
but we are taking about line oriented input here.) As I keep pointing
out how your code could be shorter and simpler if you removed the eof
function.

But the lexer will then go on and make the right choice. In your case
you only start as a lexer would. My version leverages the floating
point lexer built in to scanf to decide if there is a number present.
You also use that lexer but you discard some of the information that
comes out of it.

I decided your specification was intended to mean process a line if it
starts with a number ans skip lines like ".....". That was my
application of the common sense you asked me use. The criterion I would
actually use is that there are three numbers on the line, since the code
goes on to use three numbers. However, it was clear that that was not
the inntent of your specification by an stretch of the imagination.

I wrote out the code for you -- there is no need to speculate what I
would do. It's only a handful of lines of C. I even said how to switch
to my preferred semantics: change > 0 to == n_items in one function. A
tiny change. Note how the file input and the parsing are separate
(despite your saying above the I want to mix them up).

I keep asking you how you would make that change in your C program but
you don't say.

Of course. And I can write longer more complex versions than yours. I
don't see what that shows.

Yes. Here's the Pascal to sum some input numbers:

  program numbers;
  var x, sum: real;
  begin
     sum := 0;
     while not eof do begin
        read(x);
        sum := sum + x
     end;
     writeln('Sum = ', sum);
  end.

What if I want to stop reading when I see the first thing that is not a
number? Or maybe I want to process all the numbers and simply ignore
the non-numeric stuff? I am trapped by Pascal's IO model. The only way
out is to write the whole floating-point input function again but with
extra data being returned on the success or otherwise of the input.

If I could say

  if read(x) then sum := sum + x;

I would be home and dry. That's the C way. The language's model of IO
is important.

What am I to get from this? Your C code ignores data errors. That you
can write some other program that does not is beside the point. I asked
if the support functions in your code were the ones you use for your
language because that would explain why they are so un-C-like. It would
mean that you've carried over a model from one language (that may
provide other solutions to these problems, I can't possibly know) into
C. That's generally not a good idea and it certainly isn't in this
case.

And it applies to the eof issue to. If the use of your eof function and
the fact that your readlinen function does not report errors are just
artefacts of the translation then they don't need explaining, but if you
chose to write the C that way they most certainly do. (It doesn't make
it the right way to do the line input, but at least it would explain
it.)
