Suppose you want a line input function that doesn't want to know about a 
stream?

There's this low-level mechanical process to go through to iterate over 
an file, a character at time, a line at a time, a whole file at a time 
(or some prefer a unit between a character and a line).

And there's the slightly higher level one of extracting your data from 
that unit. This can work on the bytes already in memory and do not need 
to concern themselves with i/o errors.

I agree. How can you possibly work out that it's reading a file by doing 
an eof check first, then reading a line and extracting 3 values from 
that line, even when I half-explained what it does!

The important thing is the pattern:

* Loop over a file while it's not at eof
* Read the next line of data
* (And here, display that data)

There is some fiddly detail to do with extracting data to a certain 
spec; all I'm saying is, make it separate from the loop logic, and 
ideally separate from the i/o stuff too (when you're trying to work out 
if two numbers are separated by a comma or not, you don't want to have 
to deal with a file error in the middle of that because someone has just 
pulled out the memory stick!).

But it looks like you are a fan of bundling this stuff all together. It 
makes for a nice, tight solution for a beginner's exercise, but...
