We have a similar problem with 'speed' and 'velocity'.

Both have units like m/s , but one is a vector quantity (velocity) and 
one is not (speed).

Speed is the magnitude of velocity.

work is NOT 'forth times path'

but ' force times distance'.

Since force is a vector quantity and distance a scalar quantity, work 
must be a vector quantity.

Energy flow has a direction and energy has not.

So work and energy are not the same thing.

They are related, but not equal.
