The equation is meant as quantitative description of the nuclear decay:
A radioactive sample looses mass as it sends out energy in the form of 
rays and particles.

The numerical values of the measured quantities follow that equation.

So: certain NUMBERS are equal.

'Equal' means, that the number on the left side of the equation sign is 
the same as on the right side, if all the algebraic calculations are 
carried out on bot sides (and differences in sign are leveled out).
