APL and Basic are very different languages. Basic is a simple, pretty straightforward, interpretative language that mimics a lot of FORTRAN. APL is a much more abstracted language, and one we should look a bit more closely to for further language development. I call them "surface languages", where they are pretty tailored to the application at hand. Yes, APL is pretty tailored to a branch of mathematics. The level of abstraction has the consequence that it doesn't matter so much that it is interpreted, because it does much bigger chunks of processing for every token. (Yes, IMNSHO APL goes a bit overboard in terseness; but that is me). I see way to few such languages, and the ones I see are overly complicated and does not bring much joy. Like the sendmail.cf language. Or the asterisk extensions.conf one. The kamailio one is a lot better. All of these are rulesets, but very powerful ones. But they all lack in friendly and anti-bug syntax. One application that could do well with this is the spredsheet. I have seen some examples, but you need to integrate the language with the graphics.
