I run Slackware. I truly love it, but like so many longtime Linux
distros, it is DRM'd. IOW, no decss capability here. Fear of the
copyright cartels has snipped its multimedia balls. This is the trend
in long-lived distros not wanting to run afoul of the copyright sharks
that prowl the internet.

My ancient Sony Trinitron (CRT) TV finally went belly up and I now
have no way to watch the Netflix DVDs I'm subscribed to. What to do.
My DVD player still works, but is too old to have any HDMI or other
current connections and my new 24" Acer flat panel monitor has no old
interfaces. Again, what to do? Tried installing a Slack pkg of VLC, but
gave up after 60+ pkgs and another 20-30 to go. Screw that.

Fortunately, there are some pirates afoot and they DO have the balls
and they do deliver. The one I found is LiMP 2.5. A mere 120M liveCD
and has all that decss stuff. Includes xine and mplayer. I've found
xine to me the better player, though they both work. I notice LiMP
2.5 hasn't been updated since 2007. Why? Fear of Sharks? Perhaps,
but what they left works. My old P4 mobo with a mere .87G RAM works
damn good if the disc is in good shape. Even the menu options work by
way of mouse clicks. I'm amazed. Burn it with K3B and beat the
sharks.

Dwnld the 2.5 zip file and unzip the iso and burn to DVD. The 1.7 version does NOT
work. Ignore it.

NO!! ....I'm not ripping or copying. Jes happy to be able to view the
DVDs I pay to watch on my superior computer monitor. (BTW, much to my
surprise, the monitor aspect ratio works perfectly all by itself) ;)

I run CentOS 5.9 (based on RHEL 5.9). The RPMForge repo includes mplayer,
which has libdecss statically linked in. I can even play *European* (Region
2) DVDs! I believe there exists out there built binaries of mplayer that can
be installed on Slack.

If you are running Slackware then you can find and build decss or any
other software you might want that isn't spoon fed to you.

    Non problem solved.

Prob solved, my ass!

Go to Slacky (recommended by VideoLAN). Count the depenze pkgs. I
quit at 50+. Install abob's VLC build. Sorry. It does NOT play
encrypted DVDs! This all on a stk 13.37 install that's worked fine
fer a yr.

I got yer "spoon fed" hangin'!

I think you need libdvdcss or something. Its ahem. Widely available,
just not necessarily in yer distro

Its the 'cracker' for MOST encrypted/regionalised DVDS.

I could write a script or possibly even do an xargs one-liner to use
ldd to query what my media player of choice is using and tarball that
whole thing up for you as a "MacOS style package".

   It's not the distribution.

   It's the end user.

Any distribution is just a collection of upstream packages and perhaps
a method of spoon feeding those packages to the end user.

Download the source and stop being a helpless idiot.

A slack user that can't sort themselves out is an embarrasment, a poser troll, or both.

It's the missing bit that may of the fancier distributions require
you to manually download from some 3rd party source. Of course this is
all pretty trivial to determine even with the most incompetent attempts
at using Google.

If you can't play a DVD, you don't really want to.

I thought much the same thing. The guy claims he has been using Slackware
for 13 years and he's not able to figure out how to play DVDs?

Something very fishy about that one... (flatfishy?)

Nah, "notbob" is just an old geezer. He's been posting to the Slackware
group for ages. He's definitely not flatfish+++.

flatfish. Ha! Now there's a nick I've not heard in ages. ;)

Yeah, I'm jes an oldster who's tired of sloggin' thru a jillion
depenzes. Slack is great for a lotta things, but multimedia is not
one of them. Pat is rather gun shy when it comes to even hinting at
the impropriety of copyright infringement. Fine. His choice, his
distro. Mine is to watch a dvd. Yeah, I could download and install
80+ pkgs or dig thru the landslide of recommended depenze and
pick-choose the right one. I can also find an easier way, which I
did. As slack veterans also say, "ask how, get 8 diff correct
answers".

BTW, using slack does not automatically make one a guru. I may know
more than the avg screwbu user, but I'm no linux expert. Not by a
damn sight. I can compile from source, but I've yet to compile a
single kernel. I use slackware linux cuz it gives me full control
and it's actually pretty simple and straightforward, not cuz I wanna
aspire to Mr Knowitall.

BTW, thnx for the defenze, Aragorn. ;)

Oh, I regularly see him show up in troll threads which are cross-posted
to any of the groups I'm in, but I always hit "I" (for "ignore thread")
in my newsreader whenever I see a thread from C.O.L.A. being cross-
posted again. (My newsreader doesn't do filtering on the "Groups"
field.)

I've done some minor compiling of userspace software here and there, but
I've already built many kernels, and I got it right on the first try.
Actually, /compiling/ it took far less time than /configuring/ it. ;-)

(I haven't built any kernels anymore recently, but building a kernel on
my twin AMD Opteron dual-core ccNUMA took about 50 seconds with "-j5".
;-)

I've used a few different distros over the years, on both servers and
workstations. It's not my intent to actually study the operating system
anymore either. I know what I need to know. I'm just using GNU/Linux
now, simply because it's the best operating system out there. ;-)

Doesn't mean I never learn anything new anymore, though. There are
still a few things I want to get the hang of. awk for instance. ;-)

Not for me, linux is getting to be a big pain in the ass. It is getting
more like microsoft windows every day. except instead of update once a
week as in ms windows it's update nearly every day in linux. Hell even
autotools had two new versions in a Week!

I have been using linux since Redhat 4.0, no that is NOT RHEL either.
Since most of the distros sufficently pisses me off and there are no
great distros any more I am building my own. I have built scratch built
servers systems since LFS-3.0. I am going to build both server and
desktop system and if I tire of that well it's BSD for me.
I am almost ready to throw the towel in and move to BSD.

jesus Gnome, KDE4, consolekit, polkit(polecat actually),python2 and 3,
selinux, pylmouth, pulseaudio and now systemd....... makes me puke. Shit
that use to work is now borked beyond fixing just because all the "newer
generation programmers" have the need to change things because they can
not if they should. Linux dependency hell is 1000% WORST than ms windows
ever was. You have things depending on other things results in circular
dependences that can't be easily satisfied.

I fail to see the problem.
Update as infrequently as you want.
Unlike MSFT, reboots are never required
unless you feel an overriding need to run the updated kernel.

I usually update every month or so.

Unlike my corporate Windows desktop which comes close to requiring an
update with every power on, so I turn the system on, boot up, then I'm
forced to update and boot again. Nice.

Circular dependencies are solved by installing both packages at once.

Didn't you know that?

You shouldn't even notice it if you are just doing an update.

Only if the packages are binary packages

How does one compile both packages at once with both packages requiring
the other?

Don't know why you're compiling packages,
but I could see how that might be a problem.

Possibly using

make -k install

(the -k is keep going)

and a couple of iterations might get you there.

So I can rid the system of hundreds of useless packages.

To each his own. I guess.
Seems to me like a huge waste of time.
And I still don't see how compiling source is going to change
the equation. If package A requires package B, compiling source
isn't going to change anything.

I suppose you could configure some things out you don't want.

So, then you're stuck with manually copying some .h files at
minimum.

Hardly seems like something some other distro will solve.

Fundamental to this is that Slackware is being discussed, and Slackware
doesn't have everything. So if it's not part of Slackware, it has to be
copiled. Maybe you'l be lucky and find that someone has already compiled
it out there somewhere, but that isn't always the case, especially not as
a Slackware package. Slackware turns 20 next month, but other
distributions get the attention, and the really large depositories.

Have you ever built a system from scratch?
By your responses I can tell that you have not.
There are advanages to do so

>> Not when ./configure barfs it won't

What about the libraries and other files it is not just an issue with
header files.

> Hardly seems like something some other distro will solve.

That is not the point other distros will not solve the issue, only moving
entirely off of linux will solve the issue.
