I *did* mention a stand-alone sys-tray as a possible but unwanted
option. And that wicd-curses is doing fine. So it's not a matter of
hope. I'm already out of the hole.

The thought intended to be salient was a surmise that devs assume a DE
or similarly intensive graphics-dominated user interface. To the
extent that that's true, my remarks apply.

There's no question in my mind that a windowing environment (X) is a
huge improvement over parallel consoles, hacks such as screen(1)
notwithstanding. But I'm inclined to share the deprecation offered
by other posters of a DE, including WMs that exfoliate numerous GUI
purties.

Looking at stuff about Window Maker, I'd include it in that last
category. Not for me if I can help it.

Well, the remainder saved (thanks) for reference, in case, at some
point, I have to drink the KoolAde and go for a WM with all the
wonderful Windoes/Mac Wannabe Graphic Goodness.
