Yes, I keep checking out Etoile [1], hoping for something new and
exciting - an alternative, and each time I conclude it's got a long way
to go and not enough people are excited about or working on the
project.  Too bad!   Realistically, all I need in a desktop environment
are: a file manager, a way to launch apps (preferably, via Alt-F2 or
another key combo), and a windowing or tiling mechanism.  And I realize
I can have all of those things with something as simple as Windowmaker,
FVWM, TWM, or Ratpoison.  Then I ask what the heck the whole rest of
the Gnome or KDE environment gets me and I conclude: not much.
