Agree.  I wrote somewhere else that my favorite version of Gnome
remains either Gnome 1.x with the awesome, Sawfish windowmanager (super
configurable, geek heaven), or potentially the last version of Ximian
Gnome with the Nautilus file manager, which was easy to install, looked
and worked well, and was generally a pleasant, easy-to-use desktop.
For me, Mate was a step downward, Gnome 2 was more user-friendly for
the masses but not as fun for me, and Gnome 3 was a red-hot poke in the
eye.  I can't use it - simply can't bear to be at the computer on a
Gnome3 interface.

WindowMaker, meanwhile, just keeps rocking on ...
