No, there's still hope!  I've got your solution(s), having been through
the same issue as you.  Several developers have written systray apps
for Windowmaker.  It's just a little square dockapp, like the rest of
them, and it gives a 'home' to any application looking for a systray in
which to put its icon.  I use it with sylpheed, psi, and networkmanager with no problems whatsoever.  See:

Even better is something called stalonetray, which does the same thing but works perfectly with FVWM, Openbox, and others:
