I consider syntax errors 'hard' (notice the word 'error' in 'syntax error'; you don't often hear about syntax warnings!). Although compilers don't necessary abort on the first error so there's no reason why they can't carry on if they can. But I would want to fix a syntax error before trying to run a program. (Actually I've only just noticed that C compilers distinguish between only warnings and errors. My own tools categorise them as lexical, syntax, name-resolution, type and code generation errors, corresponding to the different stages. But they are all errors; no warnings. A warning would have to come from a different kind of tool.) -- bartc
