For instance, think of Illinois abbreviated. Often we'll see three vertical lines though one is a capital I and the others are lower case L. Programmers knew in coding they had to be careful to differentiate between the letter O and the numeral 0, and the letter I and the number 1. One of the reasons the phoneco dumped lettered exchanges was confusion between 0/0 and 1/I/Y causing wrong numbers. It always puzzled me how certain fields things like part numbers or engineering designations would be cryptic alpha-numeric combinations. Like a vacuum tube code.

Like a vacuum tube code. Of course, at least in US usage, regular (diode/triode/pentode) tubes(valves) the number that preceded the letters designated the filament voltage. For the series string tubes of the cheap "All American 5" AM radio, those numbers added up to 121. I always figured the one or two letters were arbitrary but issued in sequence. "Different" tubes followed other patterns, e.g. gas-discharge voltage regulator tubes were "VR" followed by the design voltage, e.g. VR150.

Rectifier tubes tended to be given letters near the end of the alphabet. 5U4 was a popular tube: 5-volt filament, 4 elements. (The number at the end was usually the number of elements in the tube.) CRTs were different; the first number was the size of the screen in inches, and the code usually ended in Pn, which identified the phosphor. For example, 5BP1 was a 5-inch tube with a green phosphor. Black-and white TV picture tubes usually had a P4 phosphor, while shadow-mask colour tubes were P22. P7 was a long-persistence phosphor used in radar displays. > "Different" tubes followed other patterns, e.g. gas-discharge voltage > regulator tubes were "VR" followed by the design voltage, e.g. VR150. Sometimes this designation was preceded by a code similar to the ones above; for example, VR150 was also known as 0D3. The zero took the place of the heater voltage in tubes that had no heater. -- /~\ Charlie Gibbs | Microsoft is a dictatorship. \ / <cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid> | Apple is a cult. "Different" tubes > followed other patterns, e.g. gas-discharge voltage regulator tubes were > "VR" followed by the design voltage, e.g. VR150. In the UK, valve (tube) codes were also descriptive. The first letter was the filament voltage (e.g. D for 1.4v, E for 6.3v). The second indicated the number of electrodes, and a third indicated a double valve. A=diode, C=triode, L = pentode, for example. And CC = double triode. The first digit indicated the base type, e.g. 3 = octal, 5 = B9G, 9 = B7G. 7 was used for a subminiature base. The second digit was used to distinguish between valves of the same type. I have a feeling that odd and even numbers were used to indicate different slope chracteristics.. So a 6.3v pentode on a B9G base could be an EL54. A 6.3v double triode on the same base could be an ECC52. Interestingly, O (not zero) was used for devices without filaments. So the earlier transistors used that - an early transistor was the OC71 (no filament, triode, subminiature base). -- Using UNIX since v6 (1975)... AIUI, sometimes that P for 300mA resulted in an actual voltage across the heater of 40V ! ! !

Part of our admin system is in COBOL, part is in C, part is in FORTRAN, and it's all tied into CICS. If you haven't fitted gnu Fortran into that ecosystem you haven't done anything that is particularly helpful. >> And there's no >> point to running it under Linux, that just turns the mainframe into >> hideously expensive PC. > >People do run Linux on zSystem machines. It is possible to distribute databases, it is even possible to do it effectively *if* you can partition the data into related subsets, but distributed transactions are not easy to get right - two phased commit looks simple ... until you consider the failure modes between the phases, the necessary recovery actions, when they can take place, how much history must be retained to ensure that they can and the state of the database between failure and recovery. One solution is "eventual consistency" but you have to be very careful about what that results in. The periods of inconsistency have their consequences - cheques with their clearance cycle were like eventual consistency the ones you write and bank today will come to roost some random time later as they get banked and clear respectively, it might all add up in the end but get the timing wrong and you'll have an overdraft to explain. -- Steve O'Hara-Smith | Directable Mirror Arrays C:\>WIN | A better way to focus the sun The computer obeys and wins. | licences available see You lose and Bill collects. | http://www.sohara.org/

At least one bank I know of processes transactions for the day in descending order of amount, so if you write one large check that reduces your balance too much you might get a bunch of overdrafts for small items, each with a fee that might be more than the check amount.
