It is possible to distribute databases, it is even possible to do it effectively *if* you can partition the data into related subsets, but distributed transactions are not easy to get right - two phased commit looks simple ... until you consider the failure modes between the phases, the necessary recovery actions, when they can take place, how much history must be retained to ensure that they can and the state of the database between failure and recovery. One solution is "eventual consistency" but you have to be very careful about what that results in.
