They had one large program with no source code. Most of their 1410 stuff was run with 3 character addresses. I started going through the object code and saw these strange addresses. I had to ask someone what was going on. So, that's when I learned about the 5 characters. But at my age, I know my memory is imperfect so I visited Wikipedia to verify. -- Dan Espen

Upthread I wrote that our S/360 initially had 128K, then enhanced with LCS. The OS consumed virtually all of the 128K fast core, leaving programs to run in LCS. Things improved when HASP was installed, which read program cards well in advance, and printed as fast as it could, using CCWs. > Some high-end installations used the LCS as a swapping store. The reason? On ours, OS/360 took up most of main memory (128K). We were getting "overrun" error messages on the console. When IBM investigated, they found that the message was produced after some 150 re-tries at a disk transfer failed to produce a successful transfer. The remedy? IBM increased the number of re-tries to around 200, before an error was reported. Great performance! The problem arose on account of the slow cycle time of LCS.
