Well, OK, in your world how much processing does it have to do on the
data before it stops being a data logger and turns back into a
computer?

In my world it is a scientific computer when someone buys it for the
purpose of performing scientific calculations, not when someone buys
it for the purpose of recording numbers from a measuring device.

.
A scientific computer is a scientific computer.
How it is used is irrelevant.

Funny, I thought *you* were the one doing the conflating. A PDP-10 may be used
as a data logger (the use case) but if you call it a data logger, then people
will rightly interpret your statement to mean that you are claiming that the
PDP-10 is accurately described as a computer the design of which is specifically
optimized for the task of data logging.

In other words, using the English language normally does not constitute
"conflating the use case with the description of the processor". If you say that
A is a B, you are *describing* A as being a B; if you mean to say that A is
being used as a B, you have to say so if you expect to be correctly understood.

Quadi, nobody likes a pedant.

John Levine seems to have gotten my point and moved on. Why are you

I think most of us have an idea about what constitutes a “scientific”,
“commercial”, or maybe “database” machine, but trying to pin down a
definition is hard.

The Burroughs medium systems also had a very fast real-time interrupt
system (and even Clarke can't call it a "controller of some kind") which
allowed it to run 10 document (MICR check) sorters at 2500 DPM and
select the output pocket within the real-time constraints (i.e. the
distance between the read head and the pocket select hardware, which
was less than 6 inches and the checks were flowing by at 2500 checks
per minute).

All this while it was doing normal batch and/or transaction processing.

I've already noted that DEC's early 36-bit machines had some roots as laboratory
computers.

No, the difference is in the ease of use and speed of their arithmetic
instructions with regard to different data formats, and apparently in the case
of IBM, specifically how well the machine operates on packed decimal versus
binary.

A person _could_ take that as being a statement *about how useful the KDF9 was*
rather than a statement about nothing other than the fact that your personal
experience didn't happen to include the things it was good at.

Also, the facts are that its _hardware_ didn't really make it useless for
commercial computing (as sub-optimal does not mean useless), even if the fact
that its maker never ended up supplying a COBOL compiler for it could have had
that result

All of this was in a context of how bad S/360 design was.
One could take that as using a KDF9 of an example of how
the S/360 could have been better.

But I didn't really take it that way.
I just remarked that the machine wouldn't have had any application
in any of the places I worked.

I did work in a whole lot of places in a whole lot of different
companies, but I see no reason to defend that. I'm not interested in
any contest about who has more experience.

I just wondered if I pissed in the posters corn flakes without realizing it.

Hey, another interesting computer related thingy.

I've been on a mission to get my lawns to look better.
Last year I found a selective herbicide (Tenacity)
which is finally letting me get the upper hand on NimbleWill and
Wild Violets.

So all of a sudden a new weed appears and starts really aggressively
taking over the lawn. I don't think I've ever seen it before.
The Tenacity kills a really broad spectrum of weeds and doesn't
hurt the grass but it doesn't phase this stuff at all.

So, I ask the neighbors, use google to search for lawn weeds,
still nothing. Then I stumble on using facial recognition
technology for plant identification.

This morning I install an app on my smart phone, go out and take a
picture, and it comes right up "Japanese Stilt Grass".
I didn't have to isolate the plant from it's surroundings and
the color is a close match to the rest of the lawn. I'd even
seen that plant in my google search but my human eyes didn't
do the match well enough for me to see the match.

Pretty impressive.

Unfortunately, no herbicide for the mature plant, but it's pretty
easy to pull by hand.

Now THERE’s a recommendation.

Off-topic - I just read that a couple of companies are working on

they think they can build them to fly economically.

There are serious questions as to whether any form of air travel
can be made economically feasible.

That is simply not true. Nothing stops helium-filled dirigibles from being an
economically sustainable form of air travel.

Uh, John, you might want to have the Doctor take you back to 1920.

Except the wind.

True, but there’s not much action there. Zeppelin is building dirigibles,
but they’re mostly being used for tourist flights. One possible use is as a
“sky crane” to lift objects too big for a helicopter, but I haven’t seen it
yet. I used to be a member of the “Lighter than Air Society”, but there
seemed to be little going on.

The Hindenberg had 37,000 pounds of of excess lift over its dry weight
on hydrogen, which would have been about 34,000 on helium. The Mi-26
has a rated payload of 44,000 pounds and has set a record carrying 3
times that. So I don't think there's a lot of potential there.

I read somewhere there was renewed interest in dirigibles.
I think it's a factor on fuel costs. If fuel shoots back
up in price they may be more interest.
