Silly people. Not only is it dangerously flammable and explosive, it's
such a tiny molecule that it leaks through most anything, and it tends
to embrittle any metal it's contained within.

But apparently it worked just fine for them. I presume no leaking. As an aside, early computation writeups on bitsavers talk about turbine engineering on the CPC.

The most alarming sounding cooling system I have come across is the one used in some nuclear reactors with molten sodium running round the core with water/steam on the other side of the heat exchange. Air traffic could be truly economically feasible, but with a different business model than used today. For one thing, the airlines would have to finance, construct, and maintain their own airports, an enormously expensive undertaking. They've got a great deal now with them being tax free and a worry for municipalities, not themselves. Railroads had to build their own union stations and pay all the expenses and taxes on them. Lots and lots of property and business taxes.

Once fuel prices shot up, airlines reduced cruising speed to save fuel and money. I think it was about 625 mph and now 550 mph. Of course, this isn't really new. The SS United States was built as a fast ship and it could move. But at high speed it drank fuel like crazy, so they never really ran it at its top speed. It actually needed a subsidy to run.

Each type (737, 787, etc) have a cruise speed that is most economical. Other factors also play into the choice of speed, including scheduling issues at larger hubs and in-trail FAA restrictions. The 737-800, for example, cruises most economically at .789 mach (about 530 mph), while the 787 cruises at .870 mach (747 is .855 mach).

Being under a fighter jet pattern with the sonic booms wasn't fun.

Kind of hard to fly NY to LA over the ocean. SpaceX could do it of course, but it would lengthen the trip time and sonic booms are the least of their worries.

And they are _really_ fast by ocean-crossing ship standards--one stopped halfway across the Atlantic to search for a crashed airplane and _still_ broke the then-existing record. Currently it's 41.3 knots. >

And leaving aside the noise and massive flames issue, they're VTOL so in principle they can operate from downtown.
