I have read some claims that there are calculus courses/knowledge that
can come in handy in theoretical physics.

That is substationally above my pay grade, so I only took two
semesters of it so I could get my Bach Degree.

Makes sense. I liked physics too.
Again I never thought I was smart enough to become a theoretical
physicist. I knew more than one programmer that came from a physics
background.

There's great deal of math that is known to be useful in theoretical
physics. The thing is the mathematicians weren't trying to make
something useful, they were playing with what they considered to be
grand ideas, then the physicists glommed onto them and found uses for
them. Differential equations are all over the place in physics and
engineering (in 2020 engineers don't see them very much
anymore--they're buried in software), then there's non-Euclidean
geometry, group theory, and on and on.

Calculus is a beginning, not an end.

General relativity is best expressed in tensor calculus notation,
and differential equations are generally useful in theoretical physics so
yes calculus comes in handy in theoretical physics. It's not just calculus
though there are bits of group theory in there too and there's at least one
model being looked at that as far as I can understand is based on an
intersection of graph theory and iterated function spaces.

It is for good reason that the department Hawking worked in is
called the "Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics" the
two are deeply intertwined.

Oh yes. Science majors take physics after getting a foundation
in calculus. You need calculus to do college physics.

If fading memory serves, high school physics dealt with objects
moving with a constant rate of acceleration. But in college
the acceleration varied. Also, the path could be curved.
For that calculus was necessary.

I think advanced physics was almost all expressed in calculus
terms.

In bitsavers there are notes of early conferences discussing
how the machines of the day could be used to solve complex
physics problems. They have some nasty integrals.

If your memory is right, then USA school mathematics must
be way behind that here in Brit.

In a Brit grammar school (Nailsea, before it got comprehensivised)
we got out first tentative contact with The Calculus at
about age 14.

Yeah... In 7th grade I took algebra. My dad got transferred. The new
school told me no algebra until 9th grade. So I took it twice, once in
junior high and once in high school.

Among some compsci types there was a prejudice against
COBOL (and business processing). Somehow the compsci
types thought all of that was beneath them. IBM
mainframes were beneath them as well. They loved
the PDP, Unix, C and Internet related stuff.

APL, like PL/I, was a specialty language. There were a few
fans who loved it, but the rest of the world ignored it.

IMHO, APL was only good for very specialized applications.
The greek letters were a nuisance and we were always
searching for the special font needed on the teleprinter.

It sure seems they want to take all the fun out of programming.

But that's actually nothing new. Because of the high
demand for programmers and special needs of the job,
corporate management was forced to tolerate a less
(sometimes much less) structured work environment than
they mandated for other jobs such as accountants or
engineers. Geez, I remember many managers who couldn't
stand the fact that programmers simply couldn't work
the standard 9-5 lunch 12-1 because of the demands
of running a job when the computer happened to be
free. They didn't like programmers violating the
corporate dress code; programmers collaborating
with each other or roaming about lost in thought.

Now with demand reduced and other changes, corporate
America has achieved its goal of cracking down in
many installations. They even use security
badges as time clocks to track comings and goings.

That is all so accurate.

The part about "sometimes much less" made me laugh.
I think I did my best to make that happen.

Probably because C is what the programmers know. It used to be BASIC that
was used for everything, then C, and probably now the new guys want to code
everything in Python.

Come on, buck up chaps ! ! ! ! !

Just because most of us are well on the way to
our second childhood is no reason to behave as
though we never left the first!

Interesting the current threads about the
IBM 360 et seq. Having cut my teeth on
DEC's products of the PDPs 11 & 8, and then
subsequently onto micros, mainly Intel, I
had always regarded the IBM products as the
be all and end all, up in the gods of computing.

Interesting to see the feet of clay!

Although I did have a passing acquaintance with
a 360 clone, the Perkin Elmer (Formerly Interdata)
8/32 programmed in CORAL, so no low level machine
code experience as is my wont.

Compiler technology 101 (well, maybe 102). Hint: The linker
invokes the compiler again. gcc does this via a plugin.
The MVS linker can also do this, as evidenced by the C/C++
compiler for MVS. VS Fortran just does not seem to use
this nifty feature.

What you do not seem to understand is that VS Fortran does not do
link-time optimization (or interprocedural optimization, if you
will), unlike C/C++ for MVS.

I do co-maintain a piece of software you might have heard of.

A bit further above, you asked if I had ever compiled anything on
MVS. In here, you read that I did, and you even commented on that.

A hint: It makes sense to scroll up a text and read it again

Why would you have to work hader for this? I'm

If you want modern Fortran on a zSystem, then you currently have
to run Linux. gfortran works out of the box, I'm not sure about
clang / flang.

It is a very sad state of affairs that MVS has no modern Fortran
compiler. IBM certainly could port xlf to MVS, using the existing
middle and back end of the C/C++ compiler. Porting gcc and gfortran
would probably be more effort, especially because of library.

IMHO, everybody should have access to a modern Fortran compiler on
his favourite system :-)

What I understand is that you are telling me that I have a compelling

Tell me exactly what link time optimization will do for me on MVS,
linking to COBOL and CICS.

There are many pieces of software that I have heard of that have no
place anywhere near production code. The fact that you "co-maintain"
something doesn't mean that you have ever had to maintain production
code.

The point is that none of the errors you seem to think are rampant in
Fortran code on MVS go undetected. MVS loves to complain.

Look, I've written Python code that writes that much JCL. I was
questioning your level of real world experience. It is obviously very
low. You may be a whizbang on open source where the worst that
happens when it goes bust is that somebody is mean to you on an online
forum, but that's not the world I live in. If our code doesn't work I
have to beat on it until it does. And if that means grabbing a catnap
on the conference room table and living on coffee for three days it
does. If you haven't ever lived that life then don't tell the rest of
us how great you are.

And they do still fit. You're coming across as a typical hotshot kid
who walks into a mainframe shop planning on showing the old fogeys how
it's done. And the fogeys will let the kid do it up to a point. But
after the third or fourth time that the kid has been rousted out of
bed at 2 AM to fix whatever he broke that has brought down production
(the fogeys are being mean--if they kid's not there they'll just toss
his busted code down the crapper and link in the version that works)
the kid gets the idea that maybe there are things he doesn't know.

Well, first there's the uphill battle against management to get your
open source wondercompiler installed on the system. Then there's the
time it takes to beat it into submission so that it actually links to
the existing codebase, if that can be done at all. And then there's
all the nonstandard procs that someone has to write and maintain. And
then we make a change in a module and the wundercompiler won't compile
it. So now we have to figure out what we have to change to make it
compile. And then we have to TEST THAT DAMNED UNNECESSARY CHANGE to
prove that it doesn't change the result of any important calculation,
which it likely will, and then the actuaries and accountants and
lawyers have to spend expensive analysis time figuring out whether
than tenth of a cent that the damned piece of crap is off is something
that's going to bite us. So what does it gain me, personally, that is
worth the hassle?

Well that's nice. We should all have free ice cream and a pony too.
