Comcast techs (using the word in its loosest possible meaning) were
terrified that users would make multiple connections to their IMAP
store, because this is much more efficient than single streams, and so
fucked around with the gateways to drop additional connections because
it was too complicated to try to break the IMAP software in such a way
that it would only accept one connection per user (I believe the minimum
setting the software allowed was either 2 or 4 connections).

this resulted in lost mail, corrupted mail, lost drafts, and all sorts
of problems; all cause my a fundamental incompetence on Comcast's part.

ISPs only provide email because they have to. They resent every single
dime they spend on it, and they resent every single customer who uses
email. It is the last thing on their priority list and if they could
just shut down ports they would do it in a heartbeat.
