I agree.  I also don't think it is morally wrong not to give access to 
hobbyists even after the costs are already covered and no paying 
customers are lost.

People who follow my usenet postings know that I have always criticised 
the other RMS for this attitude, and his even worse attitude that anyone 
who thinks other than he does is morally inferior.

I'm not demanding free access; I'm asking if it is possible for me to 
pay for access.

Having said that, I don't think HP actually lost any money by providing
access to patches for hobbyists.  Since hobbyists often can risk
installing new stuff earlier than "real" customers, in the past they
have found and reported bugs which otherwise would have been found later
and perhaps in a more costly (i.e. revenue-losing for the bitten
customer) manner.  So, one could make a case that, on the whole, it is a
good idea do provide hobbyist access, but of course the decision is
HP's.  That's not the issue, though; the issue is can I pay if I want
to, or do I have to be a big customer to even get a quote.
