Not really.  Both are commercial products.  Both cost money to produce.
And both belong to somebody who makes a living selling them.

I am amazed at how many people who make their living in the IT world
seem to think that the fruits of other people's labors should be given
to them freely.

Cost is irrelevant.  In both cases it is someone else's property and
it is theirs to do with as they please.  HP should no more be expected
to give away the fruits of their labors than Porsche.  The tangibility
of the product is irrelevant.  And what benefit are you refering to?
I see a benefit for the Hobbyist who has no investment in the IP.  I
see little if any benefit for the guy who actually paid to develop those
patches.  At least not in this reality.
