I generally don't bother, leave wifi and bluetooth on all the time 
too. I do normally turn mobile data off because its convenient to 
force the phone to only use wifi when its available. 

With the iphone you can explicitly specify that some stuff
like podcast updating and app updates only happens on
wifi, never on mobile data, but there is a bug which can
see that get ignored at times and I have seen a burst of
mobile data use that looks like its app updates from the 
volume. That's why I deliberately turn the mobile data off
when I remember to do that. 

You are much more limited with mobile data off when
using the two main GPS apps, google maps and apple
maps so I have mobile data turned on when using them. 
I normally use google maps but sometimes use apple
maps because Siri uses Apple maps and there is no 
way to force it to use google maps. Don't actually 
use Siri to initiate navigation that much tho, it can
be fucking hopeless at times, too stupid to realise
that I'm very unlikely to want to drive to Wall St,
NY and much more likely to want to go to 
Waugh St just a couple of KM away instead etc. 

It is handy when you are driving around as the
only person in the car and prefer to not have to
stop to initiate a new navigation etc. 

I bet the problem is the screen and it looks likely
that you should be able to force the screen off if
you start a navigation and then turn the screen
off manually. And when you check something
like the time to destination, turn the screen off
after doing that. Otherwise it appears to be
keeping the screen on so you can glance at it. 

The other obvious approach is to always power
the phone from the car when doing those longer
runs so you don't care about power use. 

Not practical on the garage sale run tho because
you need the phone with you out of the car as well
as in it until the iphone gets inductive charging. 

And I must get off my arse and get a proper bluetooth
handsfree now that we coordinate when the garage
sales have opened with phone calls. It's a bit awkward
with a manual car otherwise and the fine isn't cheap.
