But there are plenty of places where the is no 4G service
available yet. I haven't found anywhere its available in
my town yet, but haven't checked that too carefully yet.

I was wondering if that was some glitch in the way the
phone was displaying what mode it was using, but have
just spent a couple of days in Sydney and did get 4G
a bit of the time, particularly around central station.
Not in quite a bit of the rest of the CBD tho, even just
up on George St etc. Didn't check where it was available
too carefully tho, just zoomed out on to the end of the
Dulwich Hill light rail and back to try that to waste some
time and around the more central parts of the CBD and
out to the Power House Museum.

If its so patchy there, its not likely to be
that common much else for a while yet.

That is only relevant if you say want a sim you can leave
in the car and only use if say the car breaks for that sort
of emergency and never use it at all except for that. Not
a very common use of a sim.

That's not correct, the As You Go does have data available
for 7.5c/MB that you pay for as you use it and now with
the automatic conversion to 4G even if only 3G data is
available, its charged by the 1KB and so is much cheaper
to use than the 3G data was because it was charged in
1MB blocks. Tho superficially cheaper at 5c/MB, it was
in fact much more expensive to use because of the
much bigger block size it was charged in.

That's not right. There is no minimum per month.
You are free to never use any data ever, and free
to pay for what you use at 7.5c/MB or 5c/MB.

I didn't in fact bother to get a $10/1GB block to use
in Sydney even tho there wasn't a lot of free wifi
around to use. Didn't spend anything like $10 on
data in the couple of days I had to use mobile data
instead of wifi and used the data quite a bit.

Not clear what you are talking about there, presumably the
prepaid. I use Amaysim's As You Go which has no cost per
month, you just pay for the calls, SMSs and data you use.

But isn't that common yet. That will obviously change.
I do know that some of our towers were unavailable
for a while allegedly due to the change over to 4G,
but that was at least 6 months ago, not clear why we
haven't seen 4G available here on the phones yet.

That is one downside with Amaysim, while its using
Optus you can't just ring Optus and ask them what
is going on with the towers with that sort of thing.

Amaysim's isn't on the As You Go.

Amaysim's 10GB data pack lasts for a year, but
I don't use anything like that sort of data in a
year on my mobile. Not cheap at $100. But clearly
a lot cheaper than 7.5c/MB at 1c/MB if you do use
a lot of data on your mobile in a year as those with
nothing but a mobile for their net access would.
And clearly a lot cheaper at $100 a year than
you can get any DSL or NBN for.
