There's nothing to "deal with". I encode one of my DVDs with Handbrake,
drag the resulting movie file into iTunes, and like magic it's
automatically available everywhere I need (iOS devices, Macs, Apple
TVs). It is simple and effective.

I can get local television stations on my television already. No need to
stream them.

And you still have to log into your computer, find it, and open and
stream it manually. By the time you're done my movie has already
started with just a couple button presses. I'll stick with iTunes Home
Sharing. : )

You have to log into a computer, find a file, open it, stream it.  By
the time you've done all that, my movie is playing.

I don't think I've said or thought iTunes was complete shit. It has
bugs, sure. It has serious UX issues, sure. But complete shit? Far from
it. And for this particular use case, it works quite well and has for
years in this house.

That's your personal problem. iTunes Home Sharing works exceptionally
well for this purpose in my experience. I even have several
computer-illiterate family members who use and love it.
