I make things a little simpler.  Do you have an AirPlay able Mac?

I use AirPlay on the Mac to send the Mac screen to the Apple TV.  Then I 
play content via the web (browser : television shows, netflix, etc.).  I 
have the Apple TV wired to the router in my office.

If I want to watch a videoclip on the Mac I play it in QT7.  This covers 
a wide range of formats.  Occasionally I Handbrake a file to .mp4 to 
avoid using the VLC player (I just don't like it).

In the "TV room" I have an Apple keyboard and mouse (that came with the 
Mac) and I use those to control the Mac.  This is not perfect as either 
controller will occasional break connection.  The mouse can be slightly 
erratic at time.  (Distance and obstacles between them to the Mac upstairs).
