The problem is that you need to bias the pin near its switching point to decide which side of the voltage swing you're on. There is no PLL in the SDR parts so the clock doesn't have to be a fixed period, or any minimum period as long as times are met. These parts don't have the PC market pushing down their prices, but they will be around for a long time. They also come in small sizes like 16Mb (2M byte).
