There is an Intel graphics chip on the motherboard, but there is no monitor
connected. It is nearly *impossible* to buy or build an x86 computer
*without* a graphics card or chip. *Even purpose built server machines* have
graphics hardware and won't boot with out a graphics card or chip (they are
happy to function without a monitor though or without GUI software installed).

And most of the time, the boot up detects changes in hardware and update
things as needed. For the most part core boot stuff is pretty hardware
agnostic these days. Most modern SATA controllers speak AHCI, so the ahci kmod
pretty much covers everything. Once you can past mounting the root file
system, you are almost always golden. Only picky things like the GUI (not
generally an issue for a server) and NICs (which can be fixed post-boot from
the console) remain. Also possibly sound (and gennerally not an issue for a
server). 'Broken' NIC, GUI, and sound are not boot stoppers. The main boot
stopper is 'Kernel panic: can't mount root file system' types of issues and
that is usually a driver issue (see above).
