Yes. I have been doing *exactly* that for many years (decades in fact).

In the *old* days there was often fun with (SCSI) device driver modules in the
initrd (if the new machine has a *different* SCSI adapter). And *sometimes*
fun with Lilo... Not so much an issue in modern times. Have a Live / Rescue CD
handly, just in case. The only other issues would be things like network
config issues (due to changes in MAC addresses due to changes in NIC) and
such. Most of this can be fixed once the machine is up by groveling at the
console with a text editor or a console config tool.

I am having gramitical issues with the this question...

Do you mean a *window* on a *Linux* desktop? If so, *I* would just fire up a
terminal (xterm in my case, gnome-terminal, etc. will work too) and ssh into
the server. Assuming you have X11 forwarding properly set up for ssh, you can
then fire up whatever X11 programs you want. There really isn't any reason to
have a full X-window session running on the server, if you already have one on
the desktop, you just need selected windows for selected applications... And
typically a proper *server* has no GUI applications anyway.

If you mean your desktop is running MS-Windows, you can install an X-Server
program and go that route (not something I do though).
