If you need more current then you have to replace all the transmission wires - prob to neighborhood level - with larger wires. Huge expensive job. The other tact is to up the voltage, but then you have to replace all the transformers, maybe some of the pole insulators. Again .... Most infrastructure like this, somebody many decades back GUESSED what the future demand would be. If they were good engineers they then added a little extra room. However it seems many places have already exceeded those projected electric/water/sewer/etc guesses and new infrastructure is nightmare costly in materials, labor, permitting and just plain getting around all the stuff that was built-up in the interim period. So, replace most natural gas in the UK ? Sorry, you just WON'T get there from here.

Several of the New England nuclear plants were designed for a demand that never came as manufacturing left the area. Two have been decommissioned and the intended second unit for another was never built. Energy deregulation was another problem since they couldn't compete with hydro generated electricity from Canada.

Okay. It's a completely different design but my 20 pound tank is the same idea. There are larger ones available but humping a 100 pound cylinder around is work. I used to be able to pick one up and head up a trail to a cabin but that was then. There is some weird regulation that says that iron bottles of more than 12 kilograms of gas have the price regulated by the government. They are "ancient" design iron bottles. Instead, modern design steel bottles (with the same fast coupler to the hose), or bottles of 10 Kg or 5 or 1 or whatever are free market price. It is just some standard sized bottles, made of heavy iron, that are regulated and cheap. We switch an empty bottle for a full bottle, we don't refill them. And we have a fast coupler for the hose, basically "click" and go. <https://www.leroymerlin.es/productos/conjunto-regulador-para-gas-mercatools-tubo-1-5-abrazadera-16547734.html> > > Okay. It has a working mechanical thermostat, that completely switches on/off the big flame except a small pilot, so that it keeps the room temperature almost constant. A very good machine. All other makes keep the flame constantly on. Sometimes with 3 or four levels. Another one I have, older, the thermostat switches between power 1 and 3 (one burner, or 3 burners). The "1" level is too hot once the room is warm, so that gas is wasted. Surely they will have invented good lighting sources. There are things you could complain about in “Blade Runner” (gratuitous violence), but surely not that: the look of the film, conceived by Syd Mead and Ridley Scott, with advanced yet shabby and well-used technology, the vast, towering, dirty city, the melding of Eastern and Western cultures ... that had a major influence on other aspiring sci-fi moviemakers, I would say on a par with “2001: A Space Odyssey”. RIP Philip K Dick, SF novelist who wrote--and lived--right on the edge of sanity a lot of the time, and who died before production was completed. Also RIP Rutger Hauer, who died in 2019, the year the movie was set in.

I know all that, but I do complain. I can accept the city being dark, but interiors being dark, no way. Heck, we invented the LED. my interiors are brighter than they ever were. -- Cheers, Carlos. BR is best understood not as a literal prediction of the future, but as a fable about what it means to be human in an increasingly dehumanizing society, wrapped up in a big ol' film-noir mood piece. In that respect, it's more prescient than anybody would've liked to think back in '82 - the Corporate Overlords of the 21st century have just engineered their disposable labor force by economic and sociological means rather than genetic/robotic ones, and it's telling that two major threads in the appalling "generative 'AI'" saga are *A.* the increasing difficulty of telling fact from manufactured narrative and *B.* the reliance of emotionally-stunted and desperately lonely people on invented memories and artificial companionship. 2025 looks a lot more like the film's 2019 than I ever thought it would back when I first watched it :/

Usually there are light switches next to the door and they lost the element of surprise when the kicked the door down. Again I think they have one set and it's easier to recycle it if you don't get a good look at it.

The real cops would be looking for fingerprints and not touch light switches in case there are some on the switch plate. Also for the sake of drama they may worry about some booby trap wired to the lights. bliss

The thing with fiction is, only put in enough detail as you need for the plot, and avoid superfluous stuff that detracts from that. E.g. Chekhov’s gun: if it’s mentioned, then it’s going to be used later, otherwise why bring it up? <https://web.archive.org/web/20251011120122/https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ChekhovsGun>

I'm having a senior moment for the title but it was a cop show. The season 1 finale was a cliffhanger where the bad guy tells the female detective to run, as he sights in on her back and gets ready to pull the trigger. He may or may not have shot his wife's dog the same way in an earlier episode. Canceled. Either the showrunner didn't see it coming or he decided fuck them and not do a graceful ending.

This is usually the fault of the "executives" rather than the showrunner. The cliffhanger was written with the expectation there would be a "season X+1" and the cliff was meant to draw you back to the next season when it airs in the fall (or next year or whenever). But after season X has aired, and before production of season X+1 is to begin the "executives" start looking at the neilson ratings, and decide the show is not "profitable" to the level they expect, and they cancel "season X+1" without regards to the fact that season X ended on a cliff that now remains forever unresolved.

Even if you have a next season lined up, I'd say that's no excuse to give the cliffhanger treatment to your audience in a season finale. Although I guess some cliffhangers might feel much more adequate than others in that spot. (Now if you have some other reason, like a cast member being in doubt for the next season, well, it might not be adequate but still be better than they disappearing all of a sudden in the next episode with no prior explanation.) -- Nuno Silva
