I found them in the supermarket endcap with the other batteries. There isn't the selection that AAA, AA, and D have but they're there. It turned out the LED module itself was bad so now I have C batteries and nothing to do with them. I'll have to get a couple of battery holders.

Still see them on store shelves in the USA, even grocery stores. As said, a lot of the new stuff is either a LOT of AAA/AA batteries or 'D' cells. But I think 'C's still have their place. What's harder to find in the USA are the rectangle 9-v batteries. I have some smoke detectors that use those. Used to be very popular for small radios, but now you don't see them as much. There ARE 'long life' 9Vs to be had, but you have to go to Amazon. Anyway, for handy flashlights, 'C's are still maybe the best. Not as fat/heavy as 'D's. Have several 'storm lights' that use four to six 'D's. They WILL burn for a very long time. However they are not 'handy' units. Also can't get lithium 'D's.

I wouldn't use the term "mandatory". Ubiquitous, perhaps. But you're right about smoke detectors - 9V seems to be the battery of choice, at least for manufacturers here in Canada. Not yet, anyway. I've not had any problem finding them. I tossed the battery in the smoke detector a long time ago since it didn't fit with my cooking style but I have several other devices that use them. I've got a couple sitting here with a short pigtail, snap connentor on the battery side, barrel connector that matches the Arduino Uno on the other. They're a lot handier than a battery holder for AAs or 18650s.

Seems like most detectors sold in USA now have some kind of non-replacable "10-year" battery. Not sure how long the Californium in the detectors lasts ... it'll eventually stop making so many ions.

It's not a super hostile isotope, but IS still radioactive and you do not want it seeping into yer ground-water.

I don't know about the ones in the USA, but here in Canada, the smoke detectors I'm familiar with have the 10 year battery built-in which corresponds to the 10 year life of whatever is in the detector itself. They're advertised as "maintenance free" with a "lifetime battery". All detectors come with expiry stickers you're supposed to put on when you install them, and you're expected to replace the whole detector every 10 years. Using a regular 9-volt battery you're supposed to replace the battery every year and replace the rest of the detector after 10. Also, the ones I've had with 10 year batteries only use the battery as backup in the event of power failure. They're hardwired to a 120 volt household circuit for primary power. There are similar hardwired ones with 9-volt backup batteries as well as models that are solely powered by the 9-volt battery for places where hardwired ones aren't viable. But in all cases smoke detectors are presumed to only be good for 10 years.

The isotope, Americium-241, doesn't have THAT long a half-life. It's required to generate a little ionized air a tiny current can flow through - which the detectors can read. Big change = FIRE. The best detectors use ionization PLUS photo-detection. However photo uses more amps. Some also detect heat, but again more amps. There MAY be some concerns about DISPOSING of expired units. The lithium batteries are a fire concern and then there's the radioactive stuff as well. NOBODY 'disposes of them properly', they just chuck them in the trash bin.

Did you bother to click on the link? $10.99 for two 250 lumen bulbs.

What's wrong with them - why do you need two ??? USA site ... $19.95 for one. Anyway, a whole new unit gives 4 times the illumination and at least two 'modes'. MIGHT buy one upgrade kit but if I want another MagLite I'll just buy new. Still annoyed you can't buy 'C' or 'D' one-shot lith batteries .....

I have two Maglites, a 3D and a 6D. Happy now? If I needed one I would have bought one. > USA site ... $19.95 for one. I'm sure you can find a site selling them for whatever the market will bear.

I think it was a Sylvania product but it was a low rent security system. You set up a trip wire on a window or door to trigger a flashbulb which set off an audible alarm. https://www.freepatentsonline.com/3714647.html If you follow the pdf link it has a sketch of the flashbulb mount and string going over to a window. Best '70s tech. The company I worked for subcontracted for Sylvania and they had some strange products.

I think, at least earlier on, they used magnesium fluff and the bulb was full of oxygen. Aluminum fluff should work about as well though. Ah : https://filmphotographyproject.com/flash-bulbs-lowdown/ Says they used aluminum, magnesium or zirconium. Not sure if there was a big diff in the color temperature or light duration between those. "For all but the smallest bulbs, the lighting power of a flash bulbs exceeds all handheld electronic flashes available today. The large bulbs, such as the GE#22, are especially coveted by spelunkers who want to photograph the cave they are exploring, and since some caves are immense, electronic flashes are insufficient." Electronic flashes may also not be good for cameras with focal-plane shutters since the flash often does not last long enough for the shutter to traverse across the entire negative. You can still buy flashbulbs ... Amazon even sells some but https://flashbulbs.com has many more. As a lot of old cameras are still in use, well, there's still a market for the flashbulbs.
