I very much remember those days from compiling my own Linux kernel's on 
an i386/33mhz with 4MB (later 16MB) of ram.  During the compile (IIRC 
an hour or more, this was circa 1993-1995) the machine was not much 
useful for anything else besides watching the compile plod along.  
While one "could" go do something else with the machine (Linux let you 
do that) the reality was that the 'something else' would be slowed down 
by the compile load sufficiently that it wasn't worth even trying.

Meanwhile, on the box I have now, I can start a video re-encode of a 
1080P video, that consumes 100% of all eight CPU's inside the processor 
chip, that will take several hours to actually complete, in the 
background, and go on and use the machine for most everything else 
while not ever noticing the load from the video encode.
