Actually both men were the same man: Donald Knuth. And he also did
the Computer Modern (among others) fonts.
Concerning teamwork, for both TeX and MetaFont, Knuth used various
students for the exploratory work, then when he knew how to do it, he
programmed the rest himself. I guess there's a lesson there, too.
As for comparing MS Word with TeX, MS Word does not do what TeX does,
and TeX does not do what MS Word does.
