That's really not a lot of data, especially in a university environment.

That's why I don't do incremental backups - of file systems or the database.

Ah, but you said use rsync - which does not create incrementals. 
Rather, it syncs files between two systems.

And if you do need to restore the complete disk, you need to restore 
from the last full backup plus all incrementals since then.
