Exactly.  And it needs to potentially cache every disk request - so on a 
normal system, it has to handle a lot more data than a database - which 
only handles database requests. Therefore its cache will be used a lot 
more and there is less chance of the data being available there.

And the Linux FS is nowhere hear as configurable as any decent RDBMS.
