Oh please. In your world I suppose the university has infinite funds to slap 
together a monster system. In the real world, one Postgresql server (could 
just as well be MySQL) can service the teaching needs of serveral hundred 
compsci students ding exercises and project work (they don't hit it all at 
once but their DBs remain on the machine for the life of the student) or a 
hundred researchers without overloading.

Or do you think it is a good idea to divert funds from networking, general 
purpose filestore, backups or whatever to provide a cabinet full of RDBMS 
hosts so that sloppy programmers can get away with being inefficient?
