A possibility, not a necessity, for that information can be included in the

ACK, relations ar usually better handled by a database.

Can usually be determined by the image library once the MIME media type is 
known.  I would not store that in the database unless the application allows 
the user to software-scale an image, but then image quality might still be 
better storing and retrieving the scaled version instead of the original.

That is not a sound argument for storing this particular metadata in the 
database.  It really matters where you store the file and how you name it.  
Put it in arbitrary places and name it poorly, and you will have to 
duplicate some amount of metadata in the database for its retrieval.

ACK, but that is no reason for storing all metadata.  Since metadata is more 
infrequently accessed than stored, it would actually scale better to limit 
storage to only the metadata that cannot be reliably determined from the 
resource itself upon retrieval.

You either have come across some poorly designed Web caches or might get 
informed about cache-controlling HTTP header fields.
