My understanding of the discussion has been that it's not (necessarily) the writing of interrupt handlers that is the "gotcha", although some architectures make that hairier than others, it is the way interrupts can interact with the interrupted code that is the problem. Interrupts, in general, don't honour C's (or any other sequential language's) notion of sequence points, and can expose a compiler's memory-ordering (and other) optimisations in surprising ways. This is not different from the basic problem of shared-memory multithreading, and all of the usual rules and techniques apply, except that it's usually not possible to do the same sorts of things with library or language-level mutexes and critical sections from within interrupt handlers. So: better to keep our sequential processes sequential, and communicating with well-abstracted IPC mechanisms, IMO. But I've voiced that opinion on many occasions previously, and I'm sure that many folk feel that "their" problem just can't be factored that way, and ignore me. Up to them. Cheers, -- Andrew
