I can recommend that you always use the installed OS disk tools to
shrink a OS's partition rather than a third party tool when possible.

As for the free space linux install, I use the gparted gui tool to
partition the free space however I desire, format the label the
partitions. During the install I pick the custom partitioning
selection and that way there is much less chance of screwing up some
other partition contents.

Then again I do not have a simple setup.
