So, essentially Wikipedia says the same as I said.

Distance is (according to wikipedia) a scalar quantity, not a vector.

Therefor work must be a vector quantity, since force is vectorial.

This should be obvious, if you imagine something like a box on a large 
plane, which is pushed forward.

This push is provided by, say, you and you apply a force, in the 
direction you want to push the box.

Since the job is kind of exhausting, you may call that 'work'.

The amount of work is measured in a scalar quantity called 'energy'.
