I do know -- and love -- said film.

Oddly, I have tried Cleese's technique on my SO, without any result 
other than confused looks.

She requires other approaches....

It was not a choice at the time.
I have, however, come to greatly appreciate it.  Latin is an excellent 
basis for learning all sorts of languages, not least all the Romance 
tongues.

Aesthetically, I prefer Portuguese or Italian to Spanish, but each to 
his own.  I am also wary of the significant differences between the 
different versions of Spanish: my Castilian sister-in-law, for example, 
found it almost impossible to understand my Colombian cleaner ... even 
thought they both spoke Spanish (nominally).

As for the Chinese, Mandarin is only *one* of their languages.  Learn 
Mandarin, and you may find yourself being slagged off in Cantonese or 
Hakka....
