The NetBeans based tutorials I worked through required GlassFish. Tomcat didn't work, it doesn't fully support all the frameworks so the tutorial examples which test the web service don't work. I never tried any JAX-RS tutorials because the service I am looking to replace is not RESTful.

At the moment I don't know enough to be of much help, other than to recommend that if you want to try the NetBeans tutorials you'll want to use the GlassFish server.
And to read everything you can find.
