Oh I see.  Sorry.  I thought you were disagreeing with me that
lose/loose is indeed hard for some people.

I don't see how that helps.  Can you say what you disagree with about
the argument I gave for your three-line function (unless you want to
show another example)?

In that example, initialisation (any initialisation) has no effect on
the semantics of the function.  The only help it can offer is in
readability or clarity or in robustness in the face of changes and so
on.  But, to me, the clarity is marginally improved by using ptr rather
than NULL because any doubt about whether strtod sets endptr to ptr in
some error cases becomes irrelevant to understanding the return value.
And if you know that strtod sets endptr to ptr in all error cases then
you don't care about the inital value anyway.
